Animation has always had its place in history - beginning as simple cave paintings drawn years ago, through to our current place in time where digital media is taking the world by storm. Recent generations will claim that some of their fondest childhood memories include waking up early on Saturday mornings to enjoy an hour or two of their favorite cartoons that were broadcasted on that day every week. Now you can’t go a single day without running into an animated video, especially now that they are so incredibly useful for advertisements.

Let start from the beginning of modern age animated videos. Beginning with a man by the name of H.W. Goodwin. Goodwin invented a sort of film material, called a celluloid film. His film was composed of gum cotton and gum camphor. This form of an animated video was patented in 1888 and utilised through the year 1914. Each of the films would contain 300-600 frames, which would last 10-15 minutes. Traditional animation in this time period called Cel Animation, stemmed from this celluloid style of hand-drawn animation.

The first animated cartoon series to arise from further evolution of this animation style was called Colonel Heeza Liar (1914). Another popular animated film that was produced the same year was Gertie, the Dinosaur. Several techniques were used in the creation of these cutting-edge films of the time. Those techniques included registration marks and animation loops. Not too many years later, one of the most influential animators of the century came into the picture.

Walt Disney sparked the next revolution that was set to occur in the animated film business. A new era began when Steam Boat Willie was released in 1928. Steamboat Willie was a milestone for a number of reasons, one of the biggest reasons being that this was the first animated film to include sound. This film also marked the debut of a character who would pave the way for all future animated film, that being Mickey Mouse himself. Once the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released in 1937, animated films became increasingly popular, only getting better by the decade. By 1967 computer animation was becoming more and more popular. Less hand drawn and stop motion films were made once computer animated films hit mainstream. The fact that 2D characters could be created and manipulated entirely on computers was a total game changer.

Big brands such as Coca Cola, Apple, and even Dropbox jumped on the bandwagon as animated video production continued to evolve into what it is today. Not only was the public more responsive to this style of advertisement, but it was also much easier to reach larger audiences through technology. Businesses found more uses than just advertisement in using animated video production. Such as creating informational training videos for new employees or new concepts being introduced. Though, advertisement tends to remain the focus when utilising animated videos within a business. For one, animated videos tend to resonate longer with their viewers. Another benefit that comes from using animated videos within your business is that people tend to watch videos more often than reading a passage on a website. Statistics show that 80% of people are more likely to watch an entire video than they are to read a full blog post. Videos are also easily sharable on social media. It has been proven that videos receive up to 1,200% more shares than images and text posts do combined. Logistically speaking, animated videos are typically much more cost effective than live action videos.

It’s no secret that well-seasoned marketers consider animated videos to be the key to generating more conversions than any other sales tactic out there. It has been found that animated videos tend to appeal more to any audience that they are being aimed at. The take-home message here is that animated videos used in business promotion will resonate on a much higher level with their audience, as well as make them more likely to share your video with those who follow them on social media.
